About Colleges Against Cancer

The first Colleges Against Cancer chapter in the world was founded in 2000 at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Richard Banjer and Jeffrey Ceretto had volunteered for the American Cancer Society previously and realized that an organization needed to be created to allow college students to volunteer in ways that would cater to their interests and create events specifically for college students. With that mission, Colleges Against Cancer was born—an organization under the American Cancer Society umbrella that was dedicated to eliminating cancer.

As a branch of the American Cancer Society, we join over 230 CAC chapters across the nation in implementing American Cancer Society goals and reaching out to the campus community. Since the formation of CAC, we have expanded our activities beyond our signature event, Relay For Life, to include cancer education, advocacy and survivorship events. Our organization created the template for many activities that are now taking place on campuses throughout the nation, such as our TRUTH Simulation during the Great American Smoke-Out, Smoke-free Bar Nights, Think Pink T-Shirt Sales, and a December Remembrance Ceremony.

In 2003, under the direction of then president and current American Cancer Society National Staff Partner, Kimberly Dean, Colleges Against Cancer was excited to create the first Paint Green Street Purple program that has truly taken the campus by storm each September, offering every student and community member the opportunity to share in cancer education events literally on Green Street. CAC expanded even further during our fifth year celebration, by the lead of our four amazing presidents—Rachel Berkson, Amy Downing, Adam Schwartz, and Eve Winiarski—including the addition of our Outreach Committees, the Cancer Care Network, the largest Colleges Against Cancer Leadership team to date, and a larger-than-life Date Auction! In addition, CACers from all across campus bonded together to help urge the Champaign and Urbana City Councils to pass an indoor-smoking ban.

Colleges Against Cancer at the University of Illlinois at Urbana-Champaign is proud to be the 2005 National Chapter of the Year and 2006 College Relay For Life of the Year!

Colleges Against Cancer is a recognized University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Registered Student Organization and all events follow the rules and regulations according to the University.
